  Medical Limits

Page Summary This page mentions the medically remedies available and or the level reached so far in Allopathy with some common hair problems. That sets the boundary within which we can operate for safety of the hair

Special Note Because of the 'medical limitations', Cosmetic and other companies step in to meet the 'insatiable and belated needs' of the common public with tall claims, unproven or ineffective products. Know both to chart your course

The Medical data in this chapter are based on Allopathic Dermatological  and other medicinal / Chemistry Text Books. Based on my understanding, I have used ordinary language to present them. It should not be treated as exhaustive, upto date or without minor oversights. After 1997-98, I have not referred much to any Dermatology book or magazine. For more, refer to the books mentioned in the bibliography.

Premature Hair Loss

No definitive or proven Universal solutions to safeguard the life of the existing Hair at the top is available, as of March 2004.

If there are 10 proven / partly proven products. there are 10000 times that number, widely used popular cosmetic products, even if they are functionally poor. Some are even unsafe

Male Pattern Alopecia  - No Medical Cure

Male Pattern Alopecia  is also called Androgenic Alopecia / heredity prone baldness.

There is no cure in Allopathy or other systems for Male Pattern Alopecia. Once hair loss starts, Heredity becomes a major accelerating force towards Balding.

Do not women imbibe the Hereditary Traits ?  [ Their sex Hormones do differ.] Why they do not suffer due to Heredity is not categorically established in published medical books

If not Heredity, what else ?

Today hairloss, poor Density and Baldness due to factors other than Heredity, is on the rise. Yet there are not many studies to narrow down or focus on selected major causes.

Misuse of hair with Shampoos, dry hair style, unscientific and reckless methods of hair care, baseless assumption that when the problem starts one can get a sure fire remedy at the nearest shop are the more relevant, Controllable factors to avoid hair loss. If one studies the site, it will be clear

Dandruff

To what extent Dandruff affects the life of a hair is not clearly stated in any of the Dermatological Books that I referred. It indicates that the Research is poor on this front too

 Greying

There is no Medical Cure to greying / regain the original Black colour.

If the original colour is changed to some other colour with synthetic dyes, for whatever be the reason, the chances are close to zero for regaining the original colour. Iron deficiency, Aging and lesser Pigment production are the stated causes for some - not for all

Psoriasis

Excessive Scaling of the skin and other factors lead to Psoriasis. This subject is beyond this book.

I wrote once to Psoriasis Foundation, USA in 1995 or so, and sought details about the Hair Loss Problems of Psoriasis patients. They replied that such patients do face Hair loss problems during the time of treatment. They recover on their own within 6 months of the stoppage of the treatment

Dormant Hair Roots

In a Bald Patch, how many out of the 500 hair roots per square inch are dead beyond repair and how many are just passive or dormant is not yet known.

This basic detail about the terrain is unknown / cannot be judged scientifically. Some of the roots can be alive and dormant is a consoling fact

Regain of Hair

There is no cure for Baldness.

Minoxidil - 2% solution is the first FDA of USA approved Hair Regain formulation.  It is effective with just about 30% of males and the use cannot be discontinued. Propecia of E.Merck, USA, is the second formulation to be approved, by 8 to 5 in December 1997 by FDA. This tablet is not for Ladies

Please refer to the web sites of these companies for further details. You can refer 'compare' page

Excess Hair Growth

Let us turn to the other side for a change. Some stray people have excessive Hair Growth. How inconsiderate are they, when so many around them live with open spaces at the top.

Anyway, there is no precise reason why they get  'excess growth'. For this uncommon feature too, Heredity is cited as the likely cause

Hirsutism - one Research

"Hirsutism is the growth of Terminal / Normal hair amongst Females in part or all along the lines of the Male Sexual pattern. The factors analysed / discussed are Genetic Factors, psychiatric factors, Bio chemical aspects, Racial and idiopathic etc".

In Bio Chemical aspects, the Research by Ismail et al in 1973 is that " out of 35 Hirsutism subjects, no specific cause for Hirsutism has been discovered in 29 of the patients "

For details, one can refer to the " Text Book of Dermatology, Vol. 3,  4 th Edition ; Refer Bibliography. I hardly found any mention of further Research about the cause for this factor in other books  - even after 20 years of the first research

So what does a lady do ?  Medical Research has no answer

Hair Transplantation

Hair Transplantation is the only proven method, as of date, to get rid of the Baldness and sport a hairy head. But only the available hair can be transplanted and that is less ! Or, one has to go for artificial / synthetic fibres. Anyway, I did not bother to read much on this subject. Please refer to a Dermatologist for the latest information

Gain - Can Shaving help ?

One example that tells us to be cautious in accepting some findings

One Lady Doctor in America selected 50 Volunteers. The Hair in one leg was shaved off in fixed intervals for certain period of time. The Hair in the other leg was untouched and used as the "Control" for each individual. There was no difference between the shaved and unshaved leg in terms of Hair growth. That Research Scientist  concluded that Shaving does not help the growth of Hair.

I do not know how many accept this Finding. Unfortunately, there is no report of further / other Research work on the same topic.

This is a meaningless and misdirected Research, in my opinion.

There is lot of difference between the Scalp and the legs in terms of Hair Roots per square inch, exposure, Sebum glands etc. That is many of the relevant variables differ.

When Science cannot explain the variance in Hair Growth and Retention between the top and bottom part of the head, to jump from leg to Head and calling it Research is a unwanted medical joke

Shaving May Help in younger days - one observation

In Tamil Nad, the shaving is done for both the Male as well as the Female child after the first birth day. In Gujarat, for female babies, the head hair is not shaved at all  whereas the Shaving is done for Male child only after the first birth anniversary or so.

Girls / Females of Gujarat have less Hair Density compared to Keralities, Tamilians etc. Several parents have referred to me about the poor Hair Density of their daughters, aged between 10 and 14.

I am a Tamilian male and  settled in Gujarat since 1977. Recalling from memory, I should say that Tamilian and Kerala girls have better hair density compared to a Gujarati girl. Someone can  do more field research first and get a Doctorate.

Boys get moustache when they turn from adolescence to adulthood. Till they go for Shaving, the hair look thin, poorly pigmented and soft. After a few shaves, everything changes.  I feel that shaving does make a change in the texture of the hair and also to some extent, in density.

Shaving, in my view, can help only persons in the growth phase of life - upto age 16 or so

Medical Research on Hair - One Observation

The local British Library in Ahmedabad stocks decent number of Allopathic Dermatological Books. Besides that there are Magazines like Nature, New Scientist, British Medical Journal etc. Till 1998, I used to go to the Library at least twice a month.

In Nature Magazine, lot of advertisements come for Scientists, Research Associates, Awards, Grants for Research Studies etc. In the 6 years period of my reference, I chanced to note only one advertisement vacancy for a Hair Research Scientist. That was by Levers, London. So there is no basis to assume that lot of Creative Research is being done. Have Medical companies given up this field as time consuming and unproductive ? I do not know

Commercial dark side

Many Pharmaceutical Companies work for 'patent ensured, western needed, profitable formulations that can sell a Billion Dollars or more. To hell, with common baldness !

Nature is a world wide known, highly reputed Medical Journal. Between 1993 to 1998, I have referred to various issues - I used to look for Grants, vacancy needs etc. In 6 years, only once did I spot an ad for employment at Levers, London. You have to pay the devil its due

My goal / Request: ............................Making Swapna Free to the World

Swapna Hair Enricher, as a Hairsaver, can help Millions across the World to retain the God given natural and free, anti aging Cosmetic aid, the Hair, for a long period of their lives - say even after 60 years. The site elaborates that with sufficient proofs / supportive details.

I am looking for a Philanthropist who can buy Swapna's Technology and make it Free to the World. I lack the finance to retire peacefully now. One cannot preach philosophy on an empty stomach.

But I still hate the thought of selling the Technology to Companies, who can milk the public dry. Mad is the epithet that I earn frequently for this approach, now that I have closed my earlier main business. I can wait for one more year. Refer Swapna or Cocolite  and think what you can do to meet the above goal
