   J & J Baby Oil

'Cry Baby Cry, Let it Itch'  is the disgusting message behind Johnson & Johnson's sales of Baby Oils

Law of the Land

MRTPC, now renamed as Competition Commission, quoted the below mentioned Ruling of the Supreme Court of India, while passing the verdict in the first case between Colgate and Hindustan Unilever

The Supreme Court had ruled that  "the object is to bring honesty and truth in the relationship between the manufacturer and the consumer". And "if the general impression conveyed is false, the most punctilious and scrupulous accuracy in immaterial minutiae will not render the representations true"  [a lie is a lie even if covered with irrelevant, decorative packing]

2. MRTPC: "if the claim of "102"% anti- bacterial superiority is ultimately not found to be true," consumers by and large can be said to have been duped by such advertisement campaign - if the advertised claim is ultimately not found to be true can be substituted for the earlier words within quotes. That is, the observation is not meant for one case but for all tall, dubious and unproven claims

3 Affected Party / Public: 'This injury caused to the public in general can hardly be compensated in terms of money, as the feeling of being duped cannot be evaluated in monetary terms'. This observation is against Hindustan Lever.

In my opinion, Hindustan Unilever, Colgate, Johnson & Johnson / Baby Oil, Parachute, Himalaya and many others have violated the spirit of the Law. They have duped the Public.

Your bathing bar is a perfumed scrubber. Duping means making dubious unproven claims, deliberate misguidance, distortion of facts, unfair means, misrepresentation and such acts of misdeed to mislead a buyer to pinch the purse.  For the topics and the links, refer to Site Map 2

Read this case and safeguard your Babies

Johnson & Johnson is a top Pharmaceutical Company in the World. So they should know what is unhealthy or unsafe. Yet when they sell a product for babies, which is not good even for adults, what do you make out of such a cheap practice ?

J & J sell Baby Oil

Babies Suffered with rashes

Safety of their Baby Oil is doubtful

Complaints by Mothers

Many mothers complained about 'rashes'

and other problems after the use of Johnson's baby oil. Only then, Government of Maharashtra, took some note

What is the  Baby Oil of Johnson & Johnson ?

Mineral Oil content in baby oil is 99.785 %

The formula shows that, Johnson's Baby Oil is almost totally Light Liquid Paraffin [LLP] to the extent of 99.785% (the company had not even mentioned L.L.P. on the label)

Formula and other details are from a case filed by FDA of Maharashtra against Johnson and Johnson in the court

Safety Standards of Johnson & Johnson

J & J gave an explanation to the Court / Press that the product has been tested on persons / babies between aged 14 to 34

In which Language or Country, persons above age 14 are called Babies ? I do not think that J & J should have got away with such an excuse. Is it brashness, reckless stupidity or sheer money power ? We would not know.

They got away with that explanation which is bad for the public. I hate such companies / explanations

Order by Maharashtra Government

'Johnson & Johnson's Baby products shall carry prominently safety warnings regarding the side effect that may be caused on account of these products due to the presence of Chemicals like Light Paraffin Oil, Iso Propyl Myristate etc'

[Use of Iso Propyl Myristate was stopped even in hair oils / creams by 1980 because of its side effect]

The order is of 5th May 2005. It was accidentally noted by me on January 1, 2008. To know more, search in Google for J & J baby oil and Maharashtra Government

Understanding the ingredient

Mineral / Paraffin / Synthetic Oil is chemically made from crude oil. It is not good for the skin. They are penetrative and can dry up the skin. So they are not supposed to be used in Toilet Soaps.

Mineral Oil [ white] / liquid petrolatum

Source: Distillation of high boiling liquid [ 330-390*C] from petroleum fractions. Used in medicine as a laxative. It is used in Cosmetics too. Paraffin oil is another name for liquid petrolatum

Kerosene, petrol and Diesel oils are examples of mineral oil / made from crude. Petroleum Jelly contains heavy lubricating oil

Questions no one asked, no one would answer

a] The formulation of a Cosmetic Product has to be approved by Foods and Drugs Administration department of the State. How this formulation got approved ?

b] Even the labels have to be approved. What was the department doing ?

c] Why no one checked the definition of 'babies'?

d] Prior to approval, was the Company questioned about the ingredients and safety ? If not, why not ?

e] Was there falsification of data / details, at the application stage ?

f]  People assume that when a product gets manufacturing license, all the relevant checks have been made by the 'approving authorities'. If they do not, why have such acts at all ? As we do, for the benefit of the Society, what happened to the erring individuals who failed in the discharge of duties ? The Inspector has to visit the factory at least once a year.

Labels are checked by an Officer, who has to check the stated ingredients, their safety features and percentage of use. Only after that, issue of license arise. They do have a reference manual or books to check the infredients

Additional information:

This case is of 2005. One 1998 case should have been checked. Readers can refer to Unfair practices

Another Offender

Similar watered down order was passed on Himalaya Drug Company on their baby nourishing oil.

Such cheap practices can easily be controlled. The formulations have to be approved by the Foods & Drugs department in the State. Consumer Forums, if any, can be vigilant. The Media can lend a hand. The 'will' is never there and covered by 'words'

There is not a single case of 'punishment' against duping by big Companies. Duping is against the spirit of the Law.

What can we do ?

Just boycott the products of an offending Company. Please tell others in your circle as well. That would make any company to be careful of the backlash from the public. If we go to a restaurant and get one item distasteful, do we go there again and try the rest ?

Conclusion

Till Oil which is traditionally used by mothers as massage oil for babies / infants is a safe oil. Its use has been proved by Centuries. Till Oil contains EFA also.

Petroleum Jelly - Petrolatum / mineral jelly

'By fractional distillation of still residues from the steam distillation of paraffin-base petroleum or from steam reduced crude oils from which the light fractions have been removed [lighter fractions with Boiling Point below 350 degrees Centigrade]

Synthetic: By mixing heavy petroleum lubricating oil with a low melting point paraffin wax. The USP grade is called White Petroleum Jelly and NF grade is yellow petrolatum. Lever's brand name for Petroleum Jelly is Vaseline

Motor / Engine Oil are based on Heavy Petroleum Lubricating Oil. Domestic candle is made out of Paraffin Wax. Melt Paraffin wax and mix it with Lubricating Oil in cold. Disperse it nicely. Nice, white, finely dispersed wax / jelly will be got
