  CBSE Syllabus

This page contained my caustic views on the CBSE syllabus on the basis of my study of 10th standard Chemistry Text Books. No one has bothered in the last 4 years and no editing after 2007 - nearly dead page in 2009. This page was getting referred by students whereas it was intended for parents to take up this issue further. It never happened

Some part of the original page is below

" Implanting Fear  -  threatening a basic need for education / life

I chanced to view the 'Maths Helpline' program on 23rd February, 2005 on DD. One Swati from Tripura, a 10th Standard student scoring 85% marks in pre Board examination in Mathematics conveyed that she is scarred of the Examination. The voices of several students who phoned, sounded jittery and nervous, as I watched part of the program on 22nd and 24th also.

Blindmen marking the Path  -  Mockery
To a question from a caller, one of the panelists, Dr. S. Agarwal said that the 'question' should be taken as a 'non integral function' [ something similar ] as solving it as 'an integral function', one would need a Doctorate level education to solve the problem.

He then said that he and his co panelist, [ joint efforts ] Dr. Habib have used a mathematical software to find the answer to the problem - to speed up the calculation ? Wonderful, is it not !

Why does a 10th or 12th standard Mathematics Question needs Collaboration by 2 panelists / doctorates to arrive at the solution ?

Can a student do that in an examination hall ? That would be termed, Copying ! If not, why an overqualified person takes an extra help ? What does it mean ?

Purpose of Education

The basic purpose of Education is to teach the students to learn something such that they understand and develope an interest to to know more.

When I went through 10th Standard Chemistry books in 2005, I found that some topics were not even taught till I got my M.Sc Degree. Some / emphasis on some were meaningless.

The syllabus was not designed to encourage the students but to scare them. The very purpose of education is defeated

Personal note:

I belong to the first batch of IIT, Kanpur. It was a shabbily started, poorly managed Institute then. 6 of us failed in the first year. [ I had decided to give up the studies by October 1960] Were the other 5 fellows dull heads ? First Class students were selected. They failed. Is it their failure or the failure of the Institute ? I left IIT. Engineering that they taught did not impress me.

In 1962-63 while I was pursuing B.Sc Chemistry, I got the news that one Shri Rastogi committed Suicide because of the pressure.

When I was in IIM, Ahmedabad, one Professor, a Ghee fellow [ America returned Indians would shout 'ghee' to indicate their sojourn in America] gave me a stupid reply in the class. I gave him back a fitting, silencing reply. I rejected my classmates'  advice to say sorry to that fellow. Such Professors also control 100% of your marks. [ I got B+ - over 55%] I do not know how many students suffer in silence because of such Professors in control today
