  Himalaya's test

The Supreme Court of India had ruled that

" the object is to bring honesty and truth in the relationship between the manufacturer and the consumer" and held that " if the general impression conveyed is false, the  most punctilious and scrupulous accuracy in immaterial minutiae will not render the representations true."  [in simple terms, a lie is a lie, however decorated or whoever says it]

Himalaya present for their Hairloss Cream, a Zero Value Clinical Report

The Doctor, the Hospital and the Company have indulged in an unethical and unprofessional trial.

Himalaya Should know that. Yet they present it to the public in their website. Many companies indulge in such Unfair Means to give a false and misleading impression to the Public

Why it has no Value ?

Himalaya's Hairloss Cream is an Ayurvedic Product as they say in the website.

V.S. Hospital is an Ahmedabad Municipality run Hospital practising Allopathy. Any Clinical test on it cannot be done by an Allopathic Doctor or an Allopathic Hospital

Hence the report has no value whatsoever. Someone should report the matter to Indian Medical Council and check the 'ethics' of this report

If Himalaya advertise the product as 'clinically approved' hairloss cream, it is sheer cheapness

How did I come to know these things ?

Seeing the report in the website of Himalyaa in end 2005, I thought that I can get a clinical test report for Swapna Hair Enricher as well - a report that I felt redundant and unnecessary in 1995. And the Hospital is just 2 kilometers away from my house and the nearness may compensate for other inconveniences of a Municipal Hospital.

Note on 14-1-2008: Himalaya was also hauled up by FDA, Maharashtra, like Johnson and Johnson, for their baby nourishing oil.

The meaningless answer / evasion by the Doctor !  Website of Himalaya exposes her dubious standard !

I phoned the concerned Doctor for an appointment and met her.

She told me that there is an Ethical Committee to decide about the selection / acceptance of a product for Clinical Trials. The guidelines do not permit testing of an Ayurvedic Product

When I asked her as to why they were not applied to Himalaya' Ayurvedic product, on the basis of which report I had assumed their willingness and ability to test hair products,

she as well as her assistant Doctor had no answer / evasive and turned impolite / curt. They abruptly terminated our meeting after 3 minutes. They did not even had the manners to say sorry for having wasted my time

[ I phoned her up thrice, conveyed my needs and then met her. I assumed that they have facilities to conduct a clinical trial. {I can make my product a Cosmetic or Allopathic. A 30 Billion plus British company asked for my product in 1997}.  After the meeting, I was a bit shocked. I had not read the report in full, prior to the meeting. At my age, I neither have the resources, stamina nor the desire to waste my efforts with such cases / persons. ]

Note:

The Tests, parameters adopted, the end points kept / assumptions made all sound vague and irrelevant for a normal hairloss sufferer. I read the first 3 pages or so on 9-6-2007 and then gave up.

When the basic foundation / evaluation by an Allopathic Hospital and procedure is wrong / questionable, all the words and phrases built over that is not relevant to me.

Initial / starting contents have been reproduced below from Himalaya's website. Those keen to know further, can refer to the website of Himalaya. When they spread 'lies and distortion' to the public through their website to the Indian Population, without any sense of shame or regret, reproduction of the entire contents is a justifiable social act and I do not deem it necessary to seek their views or permission.

Note: This is the disgusting reality around us. Neither Himalaya, the 2 Doctors or the Hospital have exhibited any social responsibility. They paid their respects to Money.

They seem to have set new, innovative testing methods too ! I did not come across such novel test in any Medical book that I had gone through.

Glimpse of the report, shamelessly flaunted by Himalaya in their website

....INTRODUCTION

Hair loss provokes anxiety and distress (more profound than its objective severity would appear to justify), which reflects the symbolic and psychosocial importance of hair.

1 Hair loss is a common disorder that affects men and women of all ages; and about 50% of men and women suffer from hair loss by the age of 40.

2 Androgenetic alopecia and diffuse hair loss (telogen effluvium) are the common causes, while alopecia areata (patchy balding) affects 1.7% of the population.

3 "Telogen effluvium" develops over a period of several months, is usually, not a permanent form of hair loss, and eventually, the hair follicles can recover. The potential causes of ......

....4 “Hair Loss Cream (PCPB Hair Cream)” is a polyherbal formulation recommended for the management of telogen effluvium, and contains the extracts of the flowers of Butea frondosa and the stem bark of Butea parviflora.

Aim of the Study

This study was planned to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of “Hair Loss Cream (PCPB Hair Cream)” in the management of telogen effluvium.

Study Design

This study was an open, phase III clinical trial, conducted at the Department of Dermatology of N.H.L. Medical College and V.S. Hospital, Ahmedabad, India from January to August, 2004, as per the ethical guidelines of GCP. The study protocol, case report forms, regulatory documents, product information, and informed consent forms (in Gujrathi and English) were submitted to the “Institutional Ethics Committee”, and were approved by the same.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Inclusion Criteria

A total of 100 patients of both sexes, in the age group of 18-50 years, who were suffering from mild to moderate telogen effluvium, and who were willing to give informed written consent were enrolled in the study.

Exclusion Criteria

Patients on immunosuppressive drugs, patients applying other topical therapy for diffuse hair loss, in the last 2 weeks prior to the initiation of the study, patients with evidence of skin infection and pregnant and lactating women were excluded from the study. Also, those patients who were not willing to give informed written consent were excluded from the study.

Study Procedure

Each patient’s demographic medical history (esp. local fungal infection, dandruff, pediculosis, trichotillomania, stress, diet, past illness, and drugs), and treatment details were recorded. All the enrolled patients underwent a thorough clinical examination, and scalp skin examination (which included the assessment of number of hairs lost in one-minute combing test* !!!, presence of alopecic patch/es, number of exclamation point hairs, hair pull test, epidermal changes and alopecia pattern Viz. “reticular patches” (with extensive hair loss), or “coalescent patches/ophiasis” (with localized hair loss), or “sisaipho” (with hair loss sparing the sides and back of the head). The scalp-specific investigations included microscopic hair examination, Wood’s lamp examination, and in a few selected patients, sequential biopsy of the scalp was done for HPE. In all the patients, thorough laboratory investigations were done, which included hematological and biochemical investigations (hemoglobin, total leucocyte count, differential leucocyte count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum creatinine, alkaline phosphate, and transaminase, liver function tests, stool and urine examination, and specific investigations like T3, T4, and thyroid stimulating hormone levels.
