| Base: The article 'HAIR RAISING TALES', in Times of India, November 21, 2004. | ||
| editing of: old Newsletter.....You Decide: Issue no 3.....Date: December 9, 2004 | ||
| Dr.
Murlidhar of Apollo Hospitals, Chennai - " We
treat conditions including hypothyroidism, anaemia, stress etc that cause
hair fall".
Another doctor mentioned in the earlier issue - " Hair is made of keratin - a protein so it is necessary for your diet to be rich in proteins and minerals such as iron, Zinc and vitamins. Oil will condition your hair. It does not nourish it'. What is the exact nourisher is not known to even Doctors practising different medical therapies / research scientists. Out of the 9 reasons given for hair fall in the supportive box, 3 are picked for this issue - Stress, thyroid problems and Keratin. |

|
| If Stress be a factor for hair loss, what about the corollary ? Does it mean that Persons with full density of hair do not have Stress ! | ||
| Stress is not a constant and irrevocably linked factor in life like Time or blood. If a person got married and was under strain for 2 years, the moment the divorce comes through, stress should fly over the roof and not the hair. Only the hair continues to fly. Once Stress goes away, should not hair come back, if we accept that cause for some minutes. | ||
| The
school going kid does have immense stress in getting high marks due to
parental pressure and the need to get admission into a 'high paying professional
course' for meeting the 'future needs'. Unemployment
amongst educated persons in India over 10% - do they not have stress /
moments of
depression ? Do they all loose hair ? |
||
| I have given simple analysis above to question stress / undermine its role for hair loss. Kindly refer to the books mentioned in the bibliography. | ||
| There is no medical / clinical research finding whatsoever that can link Stress and Hairloss. | ||
| It is unfortunate that a doctor airs it without any basis. |

| Balanced
diet, nutrition, supplemental food rich in protein, minerals like Zinc,
Iron and what not is another high scientific sounding, bloated cause for
hair loss. Nothing is farther from Truth.
110 Millions Children across the World suffer from Malnutrition, as per a news report on TV about a week back. If Diet be critical, all of them should have thinned heads or be partly bald. THEY ALL HAVE HAIRY HEADS |
||
| Otherwise
the news would have been that these many children have also become nearly
bald. A simple survey amongst such people would help to drive out the 'undue
emphasis on nutrition'
An average farmer in Maharashtra earns less than Rs 800 per month even today - 2003 figures. Do they loose hair ? Over 50% of Indian population depends upon farming and 70% of them are poor. Many are natural / forced entreprenaurs, working with limited land, low Capital, high interest rates, uncertainty of Monsoons / water for irrigation, coping with less yield at times, poor storage and distribution, beaten down prices and hardly any fall back arrangement. |
||
| Do they not have 'Stress and Nutrition causes' combined for hair loss ?It is the city bread who loud mouth 'stress' or tension - the crafty hair specialist listens to earn easy money and spreads the virus through these stressed sales personnel to perpetuate the steady flow of consultation fees |

| Keratin, made by the body, is the protein in the hair. It is soluble only in the intestine. And the keratin goes to the bottom of the face for males. | ||
| Granting
that Keratin is the cause, how do you make the body produce more of it ? But body makes enough
keratin that males do have the nuisance of daily shave. So you cannot blame the body.
Nails do grow and that is harder keratin. Or, is it that the body is more bothered about the Toe
nails than the shield for the brain ? Confusing and unclear, is it not ?
What is actually needed is a special pump that can make the keratin go upto the top and not stop at the face. Perhaps Engineering giants like Siemens who make medical equipments, should do some work |
||
| Colgate Palmolive of India sold keratin containing Optima Shampoo in 1995 or thereabouts. How many gained ? Feeding keratin from externally, granting that it can be done, is also pointless. |
|
|
|
|
| Linking Pollution and hairloss blindly is also far fetched | ||
| Persons
working in Mines, cement factories and such other centres where the pollution
levels are very high, should all go bald. They do not. Some do have respiratory
problems. So if we think, some of these factors are not relevant to the
extent they are highlighted.
A simple market survey amongst thyroid patients can indicate the relation between Thyroid and hair loss. It can say clearly whether it is abnormally high 'compared to the average existing level' amongst others. No survey has ever be done. But it pays to sprout that as a dominant factor. In 2005, I came across a lady in Bangalore whose voice had become a bit rough and spoiled due to Thyroid Operation. She does have good hair length - over 4 feet long, comfortably below the waist. |
