  Anti Dandruff Shampoos  

   

If I go by the hard market facts / figures, these overblown concoctions have achieved only 2 things in the last 40 years - boosted the sales and profits of the sellers and perpetuated the problem of the sufferers, making them shift from one product to another - until the user is left sans hair, sans interest

 

Dandruff

It is just growth and spread of a Micro Organism on the head hair - due to the damp atmosphere provided there. [called Pityrosoporm in the Allopathic Medical Books]

Human skin replaces itself once in 28 days or so. The dry skin powder / whitish powder can be mistaken as dandruff. We do not have dandruff on hand or arm pits even.

 

Anti Dandruff Shampoos - what it means

The Anti Dandruff shampoo, means simply

A Shampoo with an Additive / extra Chemical to fight the micro Organism

For the drawbacks of Shampoo, refer Shun Shampoo. The base vehicle / medium / shampoo is itself Unsafe. And to that, one more unproven 'cide' is added.

'cide' means Kill, if I recollect my old reading of 'word power'. Sample terms are suicide, homicide, pesticide, insectcide, weedicide, biocide and such other terms.

 

Toxic Substances in AD Shampoos ! Unproven Assumption
   
  Anti Dandruff Shampoos can contain pesticide, [DDT] biocide, weedicide or such type of Chemicals [Tar] to destroy dandruff.

Zinc Pyro Thione / ZPT is a pesticide. ZPTO is another variant. Use of ZPT and ZPTO in Shampoo is patented by P&G and Levers respectively.

[ Selenium Sulphide is another chemical, used by a reputed Pharmaceutical Company like Abbott Laboratories. Their Anti Dandruff Shampoo, Selsun, or Clinic did not work for me between 1970 to 1985. I became bald by 1980 and the Sunlight  removed Dandruff without any cost. So, Baldness is one way to remove Dandruff. But will anyone take it as a first option ? ]

The poisonous / toxic substance  would not affect the hair is the basic staid, unquestioned and unchallenged assumption for the last 50 years and more. No one checks / has checked the long term safety to the hair, level of use and such other mundane things !

And when I went through Medical books between 1993 to 1996, I never located any proof for the level, effectiveness or safety of any chemical, blared in advertisements - should I not be disgusted ?

Hindustan Lever's Advertisements for Anti Dandruff Shampoos
   

An analysis of their TV advertisements  - 4 different products
   

If I were the Chief Justice of India, I would not have spared Hindustan Lever this long.

Check the 4 claims below. They contradict one another in some way. One has to be a LIE

 

All Clear [ Hindustan Lever ] - Source: Laughter Challenge Program 13th & 14th July 2007

Males suffer more from Dandruff as they exude more oil / Body oil. All Clear is for Males. A 150 plus world wide company makes such a statement even without verification / simple market survey.

Should not Hindustan Lever verify and make the right and appropriate statement ? Is there any medical evidence that body oil / sebum is the cause ?  None till 1998 as per my study of Dermatological books and journals. Is there any today ? No if I recollect the Newspaper reading of the last 10 years.

What led to this sudden discovery ? In my opinion, It is just a Labelling / segmentation Gimmick to attract more Male Customers - Emami's Fairness cream for Males is a Marketing Success story

TV Advertisement between 25-12-2007 to 1-1-2008 says that Dandruff will not come back after a week, a month or a year -

Does it not mean that the other AD Shampoos of Lever are not as good as All Clear, now ?

If it was that effective, all Indians would have bought it by now and Dandruff must have left India early 2009 ! And they could have got the Nobel Prize !

 

Sunsilk Advertisement  [ Hindustan Lever ]

Sunsilk's anti dandruff shampoo will also remove Dandruff.  Yet the brand Ambassador, Javed says that one should keep the hair short

Wonderful - just note the inherent contradictions, if you believe the message. If the hair is to be kept short, it is not fit for Women. Is there any new findings in the last 24 hours, that can link Dandruff and hair Length. Or is he saying that it is the same old trash in new bottles !

It is a pity and shameful that a hair stylist is the hair expert - nowadays one does not use the term barber or hair cutter.

TV advertisements during the last fortnight [ 2-1-2008 ] says that Sunsilk conditioner has to be used after shampooing. Does it mean that other shampoos of Lever, which do not specify the use of conditioner, are better ?

Or, Shampoos can do some damage and one has to rectify it a bit with conditioner ?

 

Clinic Shampoo    

The 1993 Label of Clinic Shampoo, made by Hindustan Levers in India, stated that it is based on " Latest Internationally Proven Formula". The All powerful 1997 version of the product  had  'The New Faster Acting Formula'  against Dandruff. This Shampoo was broadcasted as Enemy to Dandruff.

No more out of the World claims in present clinic advertisement. Does not All Clear advertisement raise a doubt about the above 1993 claim.

A Father, by running his fingers over the son's head, removes the Dandruff and brings out a One Rupee Coin. If by running the fingers one can remove Dandruff, why buy any ?

When they cannot make a dependable Toilet Soap, [ Dove is a toilet bar ]

why should the public trust them with their anti dandruff Shampoo ? I would not

When one company makes 4 products for the same end use and adopt different slogans, prices and what have you,

 unless they are repacking the same stuff but labelling differently,

One product is inferior compared to the other 3,  if what they claim is accepted as the Truth. It is simple common sense.

Which one is lower in Quality ? The Public does not know. That is, the Public is misled / fooled

Oil and Dandruff  - inferences from products in the Indian Market
   
  Marico is now advertising their "Dandruff Solution" and claims that Tea Tree Oil has anti dandruff properties. And the base, is Coconut oil only. Where the Tea Tree Oil has gone in 2006 ? we do not see the advertisements now.

Around 1997 or so, AHA was the toast. It has also perished. 

Let us turn to Dabur India Ltd., a company that is over 100 years old and  specialising in Ayurvedic Preparations. They have come out 'Vatika anti-dandruff Shampoo' as per their  advertisements broadcast in Zee TV between 2130 to 2200 hours program on 1-10-2000. [ it is a different matter that some months back, they did say that Chemical Shampoos can damage the hair and so, Use Vatika, based on Natural items]

Either these 2 companies are bluffing the public or the Doctor of All India Institute of Medical Sciences is right. Only one can be right. Let them fight and establish their reliability to the public 

Aug 2007: Marico's Dandruff Solution does not seem to have worked. I have not seen any advertisement on TV. Now they have come out with Hairloss solution

 
 
Hidden Danger - Bleaching too   /  SLS   [ Sodium Lauryl Sulphate ]
   
  P & G and Lever tested their Ariel and Surf for 40 washes and blared that on TV advertisements. Have they or any other company for that matter, have any method, to test an anti dandruff shampoo, which contains possibly a toxic substance to kill the dandruff / micro organism  and yet safe enough on our heads / hair for 2000 washes ?  I doubt. 

One girl, known to me, got her hair bleached a bit with an Anti Dandruff Shampoo, prescribed by a Doctor in 1989. The damage got solved with passage of Time and Swapna. Shampoos are not tested for side effects.

In 1994, SLS was the suggested detergent / cleaning agent in Shampoo. But its percentage was not specified. How and why it was selected ? Anti Dandruff shampoos can also contain detergents like SLS

SLS is the detergent used in many Hair Removers

In 2005, it is nearly a banned item in the West, as per details in one Hair Scientists site. It can stunt growth. What about the people who used SLS based shampoos for 10 years or more ?
